The Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA), founded in 1967 by former England fast bowler Fred Rumsey as the Cricketers' Association, represents past and present first-class cricketers in England and Wales. In the 1970s, the PCA established a standard employment contract and minimum wage for professional cricketers. It also helped create a pension scheme in 1995 and launched the magazine All Out Cricket and the ACE UK Educational Programme in 2002.

Best performing players of the year to be recognised at The Hurlingham Club.

The shortlists for the 2022 cinch PCA Awards have been confirmed with 12 of the season’s outstanding performers recognised in international and domestic cricket.

The finalised lists have been selected by current professionals with England’s Jonny Bairstow, Derbyshire’s Wayne Madsen, Harry Brook of Yorkshire and Surrey’s Will Jacks shortlisted for the cinch PCA Men’s Player of the Year. Brook and Jacks end a memorable summer on a high after also being nominated for the cinch PCA Men’s Young Player of the Year.

In the women’s game, a blend of youthful exuberance and experience form the shortlist for the cinch PCA Women’s Player of the Year with one of four England internationals in Sophia Dunkley, Emma Lamb, Nat Sciver and Lauren Winfield-Hill due to win the player voted for award.

The most prestigious awards ceremony in English cricket recognises the best performing individuals across the year based on the opinions of fellow players.

The shortlists for all the awards are now complete with the above players joining the individuals announced on Thursday morning in the young categories: Matthew Potts joins Brook and Jacks for the cinch PCA Men’s Young Player of the Year and Alice Capsey, Freya Kemp and Grace Scrivens for the cinch PCA Women’s Young Player of the Year.

Those aged 23 or younger as of 1 April 2022 were eligible in the Young Player of the Year Award categories.

Former England captain Joe Root currently holds the title of the cinch PCA Men’s Player of the Year following a fantastic 2021 with the bat. Birmingham Phoenix and Central Sparks’ Eve Jones picked up the Women’s award last year with Harry Brook and Alice Capsey winning in the young player categories.

For the first time since 2019, the cinch PCA Awards will once again be held in person at The Hurlingham Club on Thursday 6 October. The shortlisted candidates will find out at the ceremony whether they have won the award in their category.

cinch PCA Men’s Player of the Year – Shortlisted

Jonny Bairstow

England

A season like no other for Jonny Bairstow culminated in being named LV= Insurance Test Player of the Summer for his incredible performances.

In Test matches, the 32-year-old scored 681 runs at an average of 75.6 with a ridiculous strike rate of 96.6, including four brilliant hundreds that will live long in the memory.

Against New Zealand in the second Test, Bairstow scored an unbelievable 132 off just 92 balls and then backed it up with 162 and 71* in the third Test.

The Yorkshireman also scored two hundreds against India as England chased down their record total to win a game.

Bairstow scored 964 international runs this summer, including 147 in IT20 cricket with 90 against South Africa the stand out performance.

Harry Brook

England / Yorkshire / Northern Superchargers

The 2021 cinch PCA Men’s Young Player of the Year has enjoyed another progressive campaign, resulting in his Test match debut.

The 23-year-old started the year brilliantly, making his England IT20 debut in the Caribbean before scoring 264 runs at an average of 52.8 in the PSL, including a fabulous maiden century in T20 cricket.

Starting the English summer in a similar vein, he won the PCA Men’s Player of the Month Award in May which led to him being involved in every Test squad in the season.

Following 967 Championship runs at an average of 107.4 and 436 runs in the Vitality Blast, striking at 164, Brook has built on his stellar 2021 and continues to impress in the IT20 series in Pakistan.

Will Jacks

England / Surrey / Oval Invincibles

Jacks has enjoyed a phenomenal season across all formats and is in contention to win the PCA Men’s Domestic Overall MVP.

Featuring in a new role this season for his county as their premier four-day spinner, Jacks proved his all-round abilities taking 17 wickets and scoring 648 runs at an average of 54.4 with two hundreds as he helped Surrey to winning the LV= Insurance County Championship.

The 23-year-old has impressed in the shortest format too, making history in The Hundred by scoring the highest individual total in the competition of 108* against Southern Brave.

In the Vitality Blast, Jacks scored 449 runs at 32.1, with his white-ball performances earning him an England debut in Pakistan, scoring 40 off 22 balls in the second IT20.

Wayne Madsen

Derbyshire / Manchester Originals

The Derbyshire batter had an incredible season across all formats, ending the season with an astonishing 1,929 runs.

In the LV= Insurance County Championship, he finished as leading run scorer across both divisions, amassing 1,273 runs at an average of 60.6, which included three hundreds, 10 fifties and a highest score of 176.

Madsen played all 10 games in The Hundred, helping the Manchester Originals all the way to the final which they fell short to Trent Rockets.

The Vitality Blast saw the 38-year-old amass 499 runs at an average of 38.4 with a brilliant strike rate of 165.2. This included three fifties and an incredible maiden T20 hundred off just 47 balls, winning the Match MVP award as Derbyshire Falcons beat Durham by five wickets chasing 194 to win.

cinch PCA Women’s Player of the Year – Shortlisted

Sophia Dunkley

England / South East Stars / Southern Brave

The 24-year-old batter has enjoyed success this season for England, cementing her place in the team and playing in all 18 women’s international across the summer.

In ODI cricket, Dunkley scored 217 runs at an average of 36.2, which included a brilliant maiden international century in the second ODI against South Africa at Bristol, hitting 107 off 93 balls to help England to a 114-run victory.

The South East Stars all-rounder also won the Vitality IT20 Women’s Player of the Summer, scoring 197 runs at an average of 39.4 against South Africa and India.

Shortlisted in both cinch PCA Awards categories in 2021, Dunkley also backed up her form domestically, scoring 193 runs in seven innings in The Hundred to help her side to the final.

Emma Lamb

England / Thunder / Manchester Originals

Lamb has been fantastic for England, Thunder and Manchester Originals across all formats.

The 24-year-old made her Test match debut against South Africa at Taunton, scoring 38, as well as completing a maiden international century against the same opposition at Northampton in ODI cricket.

Her ODI stats for this summer make for good reading, scoring 282 runs at an average of 47 and taking three wickets.

The all-rounder starred in the Charlotte Edwards Cup, scoring 191 runs and taking four wickets averaging 19.8.

In the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, Lamb scored 213 runs at an average of 71, passing 50 on each of her three innings and taking four wickets at 27.8 to highlight her growing dominance in the domestic game.

Nat Sciver

England / Northern Diamonds / Trent Rockets

Sciver once again proved she is one of the most talented all-rounders in world cricket.

In the Test match against South Africa, the 30-year-old produced a fabulous maiden Test hundred, scoring 169 not out at Taunton.

Captaining her country for a large part of the summer, Sciver scored 188 IT20 runs striking at over 100 and scored 118 ODI runs averaging 59, whilst taking four wickets at 22.8 apiece.

Also the standout performer in the Women’s Hundred, the Rockets star scored 228 runs at an average of 76 with six wickets at 22. A brilliant 72 not out off 36 balls, including 11 boundaries was the performance of the competition according to the PCA’s MVP Rankings, showing her undisputed talent when it matters most.

Lauren Winfield-Hill

Northern Diamonds / Oval Invincibles

No matter the format, Winfield-Hill has guaranteed runs and dismissals for Northern Diamonds and Oval Invincibles this season.

The 32-year-old played a pivotal part in the Diamonds winning the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy as she took the gloves behind the stumps. She scored 470 runs, secured seven catches and six stumpings at an average of 78.3, including a brilliant run-a-ball 125 not out in the group stages against Southern Vipers.

The stylish opener won the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy Player of Year award for her fantastic performances, including scoring 65 and taking two catches and a stumping in the final at Lord’s.

In The Hundred, 219 runs at an average of 54.8 with six dismissals were crucial in Oval Invincibles successfully defending their title.

cinch PCA Men’s Young Player of the Year – Shortlisted

Harry Brook

England / Yorkshire / Northern Superchargers

The 2021 cinch PCA awards winner is shortlisted for the second season in a row.

The 23-year-old started the season with the PCA Men’s Player of the Month Award in May and continued his form, enjoying a productive LV= Insurance County Championship, scoring 967 runs and averaging 107.4 in just eight appearances with three hundreds and a highest score of 194.

He also performed impressively in the T20 format, scoring 436 runs averaging 39.7 with a strike-rate of 164 in the Vitality Blast.

The Yorkshireman’s outstanding performances mean he is on the plane to the T20 World Cup in Australia and in contention for a place in the England side.

Scoring 140 for England Lions against South Africa, Brook’s sensational season earnt him a Test match debut following his involvement in every squad across the summer.

Will Jacks

England / Surrey / Oval Invincibles

Jacks has enjoyed a phenomenal season across all formats and is in contention to win the PCA Men’s Domestic Overall MVP on the conclusion of the season, the ultimate statistical prize for match winning contributions across all formats.

The 23-year-old played a pivotal role in helping Surrey on their way to winning the LV= Insurance County Championship, scoring 648 runs at an average of 54.4 with two hundreds, as well as proving his all-round abilities with 17 wickets.

Jacks also starred in the shortest format too, making history by scoring the highest individual total in The Hundred, with an unbeaten 108 against Southern Brave on his way to 261 competition runs at an average of 43.5.

In the Vitality Blast, Jacks scored 449 runs at a strike-rate of 142 with his performances earning him an England debut in Pakistan.

Matthew Potts

England / Durham / Northern Superchargers

A brilliant start to the domestic season saw Potts called-up to the England team where he made his Test match debut at Lord’s, taking fantastic figures of 4-13 against New Zealand on his way to the Match MVP.

Potts went on to underline his international class and became a major part of England’s upturn in fortunes, taking 20 wickets at an average of 28 from his five Tests this summer where he also took on India and South Africa. The Durham seamer also made his ODI debut following his impressive start wearing the Three Lions.

The 23-year-old also had a phenomenal LV= Insurance County Championship where he achieved six five-wicket hauls in just 10 matches. Two 10-wicket match hauls were a highlight on his way to 58 wickets at 17.9 with career best figures of 7-40.

cinch PCA Women’s Young Player of the Year – Shortlisted

Alice Capsey

England / South East Stars / Oval Invincibles

At just 18 years of age, Capsey is proving to be a pivotal part of any side she plays in. Her consistent performances were rewarded by England this summer as she made her ODI and IT20 debuts.

The all-rounder featured in three ODIs and 10 IT20s, producing a brilliant 38 off 24 balls in the third game against India to help England win by seven wickets.

The 2021 cinch PCA Awards winner played a leading role for the Oval Invincibles in their successful campaign in The Hundred as she was statistically the second best women’s player according to the PCA MVP Rankings. Scoring 118 runs at an average of 29.5 and taking eight wickets at 12.4, her performances earnt her the PCA Women’s Player of the Month for August.

Freya Kemp

England / Southern Vipers / Southern Brave

The youngest player on the shortlists at just 17, Kemp has had a whirlwind first summer playing professional cricket. Debuting for the Southern Vipers in May, Kemp’s talents catapulted her to international honours as she was awarded her IT20 debut after just seven professional appearances.

Starting the summer with an impressive nine wickets at an average of 17.7, she helped the Vipers lift the Charlotte Edwards Cup with her performances leading to her IT20 bow. The left-hander also showed her prowess with the bat, becoming the youngest male or female England player to score a half century in an IT20 game, with an unbeaten 51 off 37 balls against India.

Kemp gained further recognition with her ODI debut, ending the summer with 11 international wickets, including six in the Commonwealth Games.

Grace Scrivens

Sunrisers / London Spirit

The Sunrisers and London Spirit all-rounder has enjoyed a breakthrough summer, with her performances in the domestic game leading her to England A selection.

Ending the summer ranked as the fourth best player in domestic cricket according to the PCA MVP. Scoring 438 runs and taking 20 wickets for the Sunrisers in 50 and 20-over cricket, her summer started by scoring 141 runs and taking seven wickets at an average of 21.7, with best figures of 4-33 in the Charlotte Edwards Cup.

The 18-year-old also performed brilliantly in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, scoring 297 runs at an average of 49.5, including four fifties with a highest score of 74. With the ball, Scrivens took 13 wickets at a fantastic average of 14.7, finishing as leading wicket taker in the competition.
