The England Cricket Board (ECB) withdrew bowler Chris Woakes from The Hundred to manage his workload ahead of the Test series against Sri Lanka, according to reports.
The 35-year-old was set to play in Birmingham Phoenix’s last two group-stage matches against Trent Rockets and Manchester Originals. However, the club confirmed that Woakes will be “unavailable for the remainder of the competition.” The ECB denied any connection between Woakes’ withdrawal and Ben Stokes’ recent injury.
Earlier on Sunday, Ben Stokes suffered a suspected hamstring injury during a domestic match. While playing for Northern Superchargers against Manchester Originals in The Hundred at Old Trafford, Stokes pulled up while attempting a quick single and had to leave the field, according to the ICC. He later returned on crutches to watch the Superchargers secure a narrow seven-wicket victory.
Stokes is doubtful for the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Manchester on 21 August, according to his teammate Harry Brook.
England’s home Test series against Sri Lanka will start on August 21 at Old Trafford. The second Test is scheduled for August 29 at Lord’s, with the third and final match taking place on September 6 at The Oval.
