BCCI considers expanding IPL 2025 to 84 matches

Must Read

The Indian Premier League (IPL) may see changes in 2025, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) considering raising the number of matches from 74 to 84. This proposal is under discussion among various stakeholders.

Since the Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants joined the league, each season has included 74 matches. Previously, the IPL had 60 matches per season. Increasing the number to 84 could provide more opportunities but might also affect player fatigue and scheduling.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah recently hinted that the IPL could expand to 84 games. In an interview with the Times of India, Shah stated that the final decision will be based on various factors.

“Nothing is confirmed. We will collectively decide. We also have to factor in the workload of the players and the window also. It’s in the contract but it is up to the BCCI to decide,” he said.

Shah has expressed optimism about attracting new bidders for IPL media rights, which could introduce fresh perspectives and increased competition. He also emphasized the BCCI’s efforts to improve cricket infrastructure, including building new facilities and stadiums.

The proposal to expand the IPL has received mixed reactions. Sources indicate that broadcasters Star India and Viacom18 prefer to maintain the league at 74 matches, citing concerns about viewer fatigue and potential drops in advertising revenue. Conversely, franchises support the 84-match format, believing it would enhance their revenue potential.

Shah noted that opinions on a mega-auction for IPL players are divided among franchises, with some favoring a rebuild and others wanting to keep their current teams. The BCCI will weigh these views before making a final decision.

The BCCI is considering expanding the IPL to 84 matches but will balance player workloads, stakeholder interests, and financial implications before deciding.
