CSA: Tribute to Cheetahs Rugby Legend Dougie Heymans

Cricket South Africa (CSA) governs cricket in South Africa. Formed in 2002, it succeeded the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCB) and became the sole governing body in 2008. CSA oversees all levels of cricket, including national teams for men and women, and is a full ICC member and SASCOC affiliate.

It is indeed a privilege to pay Tribute on behalf of Cricket Free State (CFS), one of South African rugby’s scrumming legends that sadly lost his battle against Covid-19. Dougie Heymans represented Free State Rugby in 154 matches.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family but also the entire sporting fraternity that lost such an excellent sportsman.

Knights Head Coach Allan Donald shared in a heartfelt message: “Today is indeed a shock to the entire sporting world. I knew Dougie very well, his involvement with varsity rugby but also for rugby in the Free State made a huge impact within sports. This is a huge loss not only for the Cheetahs but more Bloemfontein and the entire region, we sadly lost a legend. On behalf of the Knights our deepest sympathy goes out to his family, may God bring you peace during this difficult time but the knowing that he will always be in our memories.”

The President of CFS Xander Snyders added: “It is with shock to learn that Free State Sport fraternity has lost today a legend, friend and family man. He was a true leader and mentor for so many on and off the field. Dougie’s legacy will stay with us. Rest in peace legend we will miss you. Our sincere condolences to his wife, family, friends and colleague. Our prayers are with his wife, family and friends in these difficult times.”

CEO of CFS Johan van Heerden expressed his condolences to his family, friends and supporters: “We are truly saddened with the passing of Dougie Heymans. He was an absolute legend within the Free State but also the entire country. He made a huge difference within the development of rugby specifically his involvement at Shimlas rugby. He was known for his challenging scrumming and playing techniques throughout rugby. We have lost a true legend within sport and will honour his legacy.”
