The Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA), founded in 1967 by former England fast bowler Fred Rumsey as the Cricketers' Association, represents past and present first-class cricketers in England and Wales. In the 1970s, the PCA established a standard employment contract and minimum wage for professional cricketers. It also helped create a pension scheme in 1995 and launched the magazine All Out Cricket and the ACE UK Educational Programme in 2002.

Keen golfer raising money for players’ charity as he eyes Open qualification.

Peter Trego will be raising money for the Professional Cricketers’ Trust as he begins his bid to qualify for The Open Golf Tournament on Sunday.

The Nottinghamshire man, who has scored nearly 20,000 First-Class runs and taken nearly 650 wickets in a professional career spanning over 20 years, is also an excellent golfer and is aiming to grab one of the 12 places available for the 149th Open at Royal St George’s Golf Club in mid-July.

Qualifying begins at Holinwell in Nottinghamshire on Sunday 27 June, and if Trego is successful he will progress to a final qualifying competition taking place over 36 holes at the same course on Tuesday 29 June.

Trego is an ambassador for Trade Nation, and through the partnership the financial services company has agreed to donate £50 for each par, £250 for each birdie and £500 for each eagle to the Trust based on the 40-year-old’s performances throughout the qualifying tournaments.

“If at the end of the day on Sunday I can be through to the next stage of qualifying and also handing over a sizable cheque to the Trust, then I’ll be one happy cricketing golfer!”

Trego is hoping to raise a good amount of money for what he has described as an “incredible cause” in the Professional Cricketers’ Trust.

The players’ charity offers life-changing – and often life-saving – support to PCA members and their immediate families when they have fallen on hard times.

Since 2015, the Trust has supported 426 individuals in the area of mental health alone, with that figure including current and former players, as well as their family members.

In May, former Kent and England man Alan ‘Iggy’ Igglesden and his life Liz explained what the Trust means to them in a heartbreaking yet inspirational interview with the charity.

Trego reflected on why he has opted to support the Trust this weekend: “The Professional Cricketers’ Trust is a charity close to my heart as they do a wonderful job supporting current and ex-cricketers when they fall on hard times and poor health – not only the players but their families too.

“I will no doubt be nervous but I will be playing with that added desire that my sponsor Trade Nation has offered to me as an incentive. If at the end of the day on Sunday I can be through to the next stage of qualifying and also handing over a sizable cheque to the Trust, then I’ll be one happy cricketing golfer!”
