CHK launches Indoor Cricket League starting this week!

League Cricket returns to the Craigengower Cricket Club this week after a hiatus of 45 years!

CCC will host the first round of games in the CHK Indoor Cricket League this Wednesday evening, starting with the Hong Kong Cricket Club playing against the CCC 76ers.

Club President, Fred Keung said, “This is a very special occasion for our Club founded in 1894 to teach school boys to play cricket. The return of competitive league cricket to our grounds for the first time since 1976 is cause for much celebration.”

The club’s grounds used to host league cricket fixtures from its opening in 1894 right up until 1976, when the players showed up one afternoon ‘to find that half the ground had been dug up to a depth of two feet.’ No formalized cricket has been played at the club since, though the club maintains a strong presence in league cricket, with teams in the Men’s, Women’s and Junior competitions.

Craigengower CC have been long time supporters of cricket in Hong Kong. They currently sponsor some of CHK’s grassroots and Chinese cricket programs and offer up the recently renovated Braidwood Cricket Centre indoor facility for use to the men’s, women’s, and junior representative squads.

This week marks another milestone in CCC’s and Hong Kong’s cricket history, with 12 teams taking part in the first-ever CHK organized Indoor Cricket League. All matches will be played at the Braidwood Cricket Centre and at the Hong Kong Cricket Club during Wednesday and Thursday nights in July.

“CHK is to be congratulated on this initiative to further develop local cricket and we at Craigengower are delighted to help,” he said. “We are very proud of our heritage as the second oldest cricket club in Hong Kong and it will be wonderful to welcome cricketers from the other clubs once again!”

Cricket Hong Kong’s Ravi Nagdev, General Manager (Domestic Cricket) said, “We are excited to launch the first Indoor Cricket League as our Summer Cricket pastime. We are grateful to Craigengower Cricket Club for hosting the event alongside Hong Kong Cricket Club, who along with Hosting the event are helping us organizing and launching Indoor Cricket in Hong Kong.”
