The Melbourne Stars will play an official KFC BBL match at the CitiPower Centre for the first time in BBL|11 following confirmation of league fixtures today.
The Stars are scheduled to take on the Perth Scorchers on Sunday 2 January in front of fans at Cricket Victoria’s headquarters in St Kilda.
In further news, the club will also play all its BBL home matches in Melbourne, with the additional six matches hosted at the club’s traditional home at the MCG.
It will mark the first time the MCG has hosted a BBL fixture in December – before the Boxing Day Test – since 2015.
The fixture also includes bumper Melbourne Derbies against the Renegades on January 3 at the MCG and the return fixture on January 13 at Marvel Stadium.
Melbourne Stars Interim General Manager Blair Crouch said the club was excited to break new ground this summer.
“We’re really excited to be able to bring a BBL game to the CitiPower Centre for the first time. The venue has hosted international and domestic cricket consistently over the last couple of years including the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup matches so we’re ready to take the next step into the BBL,” Crouch said.
“We’re looking forward to seeing parts of the ground transform so we can safely accommodate as many people as we can. We’ll have more information to share in due course about entry to that match but I can’t think of too many better places to be on a warm January day than sitting on the grass watching the Stars in action.”
“I’d also like to thank the MCC for their support in hosting all of our remaining home fixtures at the MCG this season – including matches against the Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers before Christmas. We remain confident and hopeful – health restrictions permitting – we’ll be able to engage more actively with our fans this season and remind them of everything they love about Team Green,” Crouch added.
