We caught up with Hobart Hurricanes star Nicola Carey before she left for the ICC T20 Women’s World Cup
The ICC T20 Women’s World Cup kicked off for Australia last Friday night against India, but Nicola Carey remained patiently in the wings after not being selected in the final XI.
Carey has two world cup medals up her sleeve but has never played a game in a world cup representing Australia.
This all changed for Carey when she was called up to be in Australia’s starting XI to take on Sri Lanka on Monday afternoon.
Carey proved clinical in the match producing a stunning 2-18 in her three overs, claiming some of the best bowling figures of the match.
We caught up with Carey before she left for the World Cup to see how she was feeling heading into one of the biggest cricketing events of the year.
“I’m pretty excited. There’s been a huge build up to it so I’m glad it’s finally starting with a big game against India to kick it off,” she said.
She talked about the preparation necessary leading into the tournament, and how it has helped them get to where they need to be.
“We’ve obviously had the tr-series against India and England leading into the world cup which was great preparation,” she noted
“They’re two of the best teams in the worlds so to get a few games against them both before the tournament starts is perfect preparation for what’s in front of us.”
It is the first time that the ICC T20 Women’s World Cup has been hosted on Australian soil since it’s inception in 2009.
“It’s very exciting. To have the opportunity to play in front of a home crowd, friends and family will be very special.”
“The girls are really looking to embrace the next couple of weeks because this opportunity doesn’t come around very often.”
Carey says the one thing that she is looking forward to most is having the home crowd support.
“There’s nothing like playing in front of a home crowd, so I know that will make this World Cup that little bit more special.”
