Lions Cricket aims to foster a deep passion for cricket by advancing the sport through high-quality teams, nurturing club and school cricket, and providing a premier stadium experience. The organization also seeks to use cricket to drive inclusive and sustainable economic, social, and environmental change.

September is the International Month for the Deaf – in commemoration of the first World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf which took place in September 1951.

To commemorate the month, Lions Cricket Union and Lions Deaf Cricket aims to raise the awareness of the rights of Deaf persons in South Africa by way of a brief educational workshop followed by a T10 match on Friday, 1 October 2021.

“As part of the One Team, One Stadium, One City of Gold, please join us on social media and be part of the conversation on how best to promote the rights of persons with disabilities in South Africa” commented Lions Cricket Marketing and Communications Manager Wanele Mngomezulu.

“The Lions Deaf Cricket celebrated its 45th Anniversary this year. Unfortunately, because of Covid restrictions no celebrations could take place in last year. Deaf Cricket matches are different as the Deaf players use Sign Language to communicate during games even though the cricket rules are still the same. If you may know of any Deaf person interested in chasing their dream of playing cricket, off the pitch and when communicating with officials, please do encourage them to contact the Lions Deaf Cricket Team” says Chairperson, Sivesh Poonsamy-Muthoo. The Department of Social Development looks after the rights of deaf people thought the DisabilityRights Team. Follow them on @Disability_SA and use #DisabilityRightsSA on all social media.
