The following update is provided regarding Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie following yesterday’s T20 International against UAE, and regarding changes to the match times of the two warm-up fixtures ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Latest on Andrew Balbirnie

Mark Rausa, Head of Physiotherapy and Medical Services for Cricket Ireland, said:

“In yesterday’s game Andrew sustained a blow to the foot while batting. An X-ray last night has ruled out any fracture in Andrew’s toes, and confirmed that the issue is more from bruising and swelling – which is what we were hoping to hear. We have started intensive treatment to bring this down to a level that will make Andrew comfortable to enough to take the field in the coming days.”

“It’s currently too early to confirm if Andrew will be ready for tomorrow’s warm-up game, but we hope that recovery will be swift now that we know we are not dealing with any bone injuries.”

Match time changes

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has advised changes to the times of warm-up matches over coming days. The new warm-up match schedule is now as follows:

  • 12 October 2021: Ireland v Papua New Guinea – warm-up T20I (Abu Dhabi; start 6pm local time)
  • 14 October 2021: Ireland v Bangladesh – warm-up T20I (Abu Dhabi; start 10am local time)

These changes have been made to allow sufficient travel times for teams that will travel to Oman for first round matches on the afternoon of the 14th.

The ICC have adhere will be no livestream of these matches.
