Any cricket fan who wasn’t familiar with the English import will be now after he took 4-22 in his first match for the Thunder, helping the team to a 53 run win and getting named player of the match in the process.

Despite only being with the squad for a week prior to his first match, Mahmood has found his feet quickly.

“I feel like I’ve settled in well, but you’re never really settled in fully until you have put a performance in,” said Mahmood following his debut.

“To get the respect of your teammates you have to perform.

“I feel like I did that in the first match, and I am not going to take my foot off the gas now.”

Having watched the start of the tournament before linking up with the squad, Mahmood had wondered how he would break into the Thunder’s strong bowling lineup.

When his time came to produce there were some nervous moments.

“You always get those nerves coming into a new side,” said Mahmood.

“I just stuck to my guns out there, the ball was swinging so I tried to get it up there and attack in the first couple of overs.

“It was nice that it paid off.”

Fans will get a chance to see the Thunder’s new strike weapon at Sydney Showground Stadium on Boxing Day, when they take on the Sixers.

Mahmood is excited about taking part in the famous rivalry.

“I’ve heard a lot about the Sydney Smash,” said Mahmood.

“I’m really looking forward to it, I think it will be a really good crowd out on Boxing Day.

“I will be nice to play in one of those high profile games.”
