West End Redbacks quick Brendan Doggett is set to miss the opening rounds of the Marsh One-Day Cup after straining his hip flexor during a pre-season training session.
Entering his second season with South Australia, Doggett is a key member of the Redbacks attack and with a packed summer schedule on the rapidly approaching horizon, physiotherapist Sam Offord is confident of seeing Doggett on field before too long.
“He sustained a medium-grade hip flexor strain bowling at training. We’ll try and progress him as quickly as we can but he’s likely to gradually build up his training load and then his bowling load over the next couple of weeks. We hope to see him back around mid-October.”
Middle-order batter Thomas Kelly is also on restricted duties currently as he rehabs a lower leg injury. Making his debut in the final Marsh Sheffield Shield game of the 2021/22 season, a game the Redbacks won against NSW, Kelly will be doing everything to place himself in contention for playing time in all formats this summer.
“He’s sustained a lower leg stress injury, so we’ve been a bit conservative with that and pulled him back a little bit to settle that down. He’ll build his training up over the next month and hopefully he’ll be back in a similar time frame (to Doggett), early to mid-October,” Offord said.
“Just building his training up over the off season and trying to get him fitter and stronger and better than he has been, he’s already an impressive player for us.”
The Redbacks begin their summer on Monday 26 September with a Marsh One-Day Cup clash against Queensland at Allan Border Field. Offord says the group is full of positivity as the battle for silverware begins.
“It will be a great chance for everyone to get out there and showcase what they have been working on over the winter, and other than the usual niggles associated with sport, we have a really positive and healthy group and can’t wait for the summer.”
