Swing bowler Kate Peterson says she’s looking forward to learning from the likes of Ellyse Perry after signing for the season ahead with the Sydney Sixers – her former club’s archrivals.

Peterson, who graduated from Sydney Thunder’s WBBL Academy before playing eight matches for the club, says she is excited to be starting the next phase of her WBBL career under highly respected coach, and former England international, Charlotte Edwards.

“Having been at Sydney Thunder for a few years and establishing my pathway in the WBBL, I’m excited to now have the opportunity to work with a new bunch of girls and a new coach,” said the 19-year-old, who represents South Australia in the Women’s National Cricket League.

“I’m excited by the opportunities it will bring. The girls in the South Australia Scorpions squad who played alongside Charlotte when she was here have said she was tremendous, offering the group invaluable knowledge.”

Peterson, who grew up in the middle of Thunder territory, admitted it seemed “a bit strange” to be suiting up in the Sixers distinctive magenta playing strip after fighting so hard for her opportunities in Thunder’s green.

“It’s a bit strange to be with the team I called ‘crosstown rivals’ for the last couple of years,” she said. “But I am very excited to be joining. I’m looking forward to experiencing a new club, new culture.

“I am also extremely happy to still be representing my hometown, Sydney. I’m looking forward to the opportunities and experiences joining the Sixers will bring.”

Peterson said she intended to absorb all she could from the likes of Sixers internationals Ellyse Perry and Ash Gardner, saying with half a laugh that she was certain to have an extensive list of questions to ask her new teammates.

“I’m looking forward to working with the players and taking all that I can from them,” she said. “I’ll continue to work on what I have over the last few years: developing a lot of game time.”

Edwards, who is preparing for her first stint as a coach in the WBBL, said she was pleased to have recruited Peterson.

“I’d heard good things about Kate,” she said. “A good young fast bowler with a great attitude and who can also field and bat well. We wanted more bowling depth to our squad, and Kate will offer us that.

“I think its a good move for Kate, and I have no doubt she will benefit from being around the experienced players at the Sixers with the goal to push for a place in the starting eleven.”
