The Hobart Hurricanes are thrilled to announce Julia Cavanough as their latest signing for the upcoming WBBL season, completing the team’s contract list of 15.

Cavanough moved to Tasmania at the start of the pre-season, earning her maiden professional contract with the Tasmanian Tigers after an impressive showing at both an underage and Premier Cricket level in her home state of Queensland.  A pace bowler who can swing the ball and is also powerful with the bat, this is the 18-year-old’s first WBBL contract.

In a promising sign for Cavanough, she has already been selected in the Tigers inaugural travelling squad of the season, as the team prepare to defend their Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL), starting in Melbourne this week.

In addition to the signing of Cavanough, the Hurricanes can also confirm their coaching line up for the WBBL|08 season.

As previously announced, Dan Marsh, will step into the head coaching role of the Hurricanes WBBL team, taking over from Salliann Beams after she was appointed Cricket Tasmania’s General Manager of High Performance.

Assisting Marsh will be Rhett Lockyear and Tim Kendrew.

Lockyear is no stranger to Tasmanian cricket, having previously played for both the Tigers and Hurricanes, before beginning his coaching career at the Tasmanian Roar; the then name for Tasmania’s women’s team.

Kendrew – who is the organisation’s performance analyst – will again also be taking on an assistant coaching role for this year’s WBBL season.  This is a role Kendrew has undertaken for the past two seasons with the Hurricanes WBBL side, as well as with the Trent Rockets in The Hundred.

“I’m really pleased with how the team both on and off the field has come together,” Marsh said.

“We’d obviously had a fair bit of movement in the off-season, but most of it has been really positive news for us with regards to recruitment.

“In what I think is great for us, our list is very similar to our Tigers list, which means our players have spent a lot of time together so they know how to play together, they know each other’s strengths and weaknesses…  We think that can translate to positive results on the field this season.”

Cavanough joins Nicola Carey, Mignon du Preez (o/s), Maisy Gibson, Heather Graham, Ruth Johnston, Lizelle Lee (o/s), Emma Manix-Geeves, Hayley Silver-Holmes, Amy Smith, Naomi Stalenberg, Molly Strano, Rachel Trenaman, Elyse Villani and Issy Wong (o/s) as players currently contracted for WBBL|08.

For the first time this season, League-wide the WBBL will be ticketed, so why not grab a membership for the upcoming season whilst they are still available for sale!  Join the Purple Army here.
