Perth Scorchers Captain Sophie Devine has added a new edge to wicket celebrations in the Weber Women’s Big Bash League this summer, with the creation of her #WicketCharityChallenge.

The first half of the WBBL08 season has featured some incredible wicket celebrations including the Brett Lee inspired chainsaw to the well-known Cristiano Ronaldo. As it stands, the Scorchers have won three Wicket Charity Challenges to date, with the Heat and Strikers also victorious on the other occasions.

The best part about the wicket charity challenge is it’s helping to raise money and awareness for the WA Cricket Foundation’s Emerging Leaders Program – a leadership workshop for young women which helps to empower them to become the next leaders of our game. Aimed at high school aged students, the program develops leadership skills around emotional intelligence, influence, and communication.

Devine will challenge her next opponent to out-do her own wicket celebrations, and it’s then over to the fans to vote on which celebration they rate the best via the Perth Scorchers social media channels. If the opposition team or player wins the challenge, they can donate to a charity of their choice.

Devine is proud to be able to partner with the Emerging Leaders Program and cannot wait to see the unique player celebrations from around the competition for the second half of the season.

“The wicket celebrations so far this season have been epic and I’m looking forward to seeing how creative the other Clubs get for the second half of WBBL08,” she said.

“The team who wins the challenge will get a chance to donate to a charity of their choice and if we win, I will be donating to WA Cricket Foundation’s Emerging Leaders program.”

Devine has proven to be a wonderful role model throughout her time at the Scorchers, with her leadership playing a crucial role in the Club’s recent success.

She said leadership and being a role model to young females is important to her.

“Leadership is individual, and I think the key is that you must be authentic to yourself and not try and change your style to what you think leadership is,” she said.

“I think the main thing is about backing your actions and being authentic. I hope people see me for who I am and know that I am human and make mistakes sometimes.

“I am really enjoying the opportunity that I have been given as a leader and hopefully people can continue to look up to me.”

Devine also praised the WA Cricket Foundation, saying how critical the Emerging Leaders Program is in the development of young women and girls.

“There is great value in this programs, it provides an opportunity for young people to come together and grow in a safe and empowering environment.

“The more of these initiatives that we have, the more we can accelerate the learning of young females which is so important.

The Scorchers will have plenty of opportunities to create their best wicket celebrations over the next week, with three home games scheduled for Lilac Hill against the Sydney Sixers (Saturday 5 November), Adelaide Strikers (Sunday 6 November) and the Brisbane Heat (Wednesday 9 November).
