Bio
Rahul Johri is currently the President – Business for South Asia at Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited. He was appointed to this role in October 2020.
Johri is responsible for leading the integrated revenue and monetization team to drive a more synergised monetization engine.
Previously, Johri served the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as the Chief Executive Officer. He was the first CEO of BCCI, having been appointed in June 2016 and spent over four years at the organization being the driving force in powering the improvement in monetization of assets including the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the BCCI’s Media rights. He oversaw the sale of IPL broadcast rights to Star India for INR 16348 crores.
Johri also supervised the Indian cricket team’s sponsorship deal with Oppo and the subsequent switch to BYJU’S midway through 2019. He also led the BCCI in conducting a transparent media rights auction for domestic and international cricket in April 2018.
Prior to working at BCCI, Johri spent 15 years at Discovery Networks Asia Pacific as an Executive Vice-President. He joined Discovery Network in June 2001 and led the turnaround of the company, working across all aspects of the value chain.
Johri led Discovery’s South Asia operations and managed the overall growth strategy of Discovery Networks Asia Pacific’s (DNAP) portfolio which included 8 brands in the region, mainly Discovery channel, Animal Planet, TLC, and Discovery Science.
Johri served as a Board member and Treasurer of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) while at Discovery.
Johri previously performed a number of roles in a multi-decade career. He has worked across news channels, magazines and news dailies including AajTak, Outlook, and Hindustan Times.
Johri is the recipient of multiple prestigious awards. In January 2013, he was selected as ‘CEO of the Year’ at the Broadcasting industry Awards for his contribution to the Indian television industry. He also received the ‘Media Professional of the Year’ award by the World Brand Congress in 2012. During his leadership, Discovery Networks Asia – Pacific was awarded the ‘Best Media and Entertainment Company’ in 2012 by the Indo American Chambers of Commerce.
Johri was listed amongst the top 10 Sports Business Executives of the Year by Sport Business, for his contribution to the 550% jump in the IPL media rights sale that he managed.
Johri holds an MBA from MJP RohilKhand University and is also an alumnus of Sherwood College in Nainital, Uttarakhand.
