Perth Scorchers captain Ashton Turner will remain tied to the Club until at least the end of the 2024-25 KFC Big Bash League season after signing a two-year contract extension.
A Scorchers stalwart, Turner became the first Perth player to notch up 100 games in orange when he guided his team to victory in the BBL|11 Final against Sydney Sixers at Marvel Stadium.
The hard-hitting right-hander was pivotal that day, thumping a 35-ball 54 after entering the fray in the sixth over with Perth reeling on 3-20.
Turner sits second on Perth’s all-time list of run-scorers with 1,637 runs and the impressive career strike rate of 142.47, despite typically plying his trade as a middle-order finisher.
He is also regarded highly for his outstanding leadership and tactical nous, having flourished since taking over as Perth’s full-time skipper during BBL|10.
Reflecting on signing the contract extension, Turner said:
“I’m really excited – I’ve always seen myself as a one-club player.
“I’m really proud of the culture we’ve built at the Perth Scorchers, and the legacy we’ve been able to create. That being said, I think the exciting part for our group and organisation moving forward is our capacity to improve and upskill.
“I’m excited about the group we’ve assembled and I’m looking forward to us getting underway in BBL|12 and beyond. I think we’ve got the right group to have sustained success.
When asked about the transition into full-time captaincy, Turner said:
“I really enjoy the leadership role. It’s something that’s come relatively naturally to me, but there are always ways to learn, grow and evolve.
“I certainly feel like I’ve improved as a leader in the last couple of years. I’m really passionate about the Perth Scorchers, I’m driven to chase more success, and I’m motivated to enable every member of our squad to be the best version of themselves.”
Perth Scorchers MBBL Head Coach Adam Voges said:
“We’re thrilled to have Ashton on board for another two years.
“He is the first Perth Scorchers player to reach 100 MBBL games, he’s an excellent leader, and he’s a big reason for the success we’ve had over an extended period of time.
“He has also done an excellent job as captain over the last two years, especially in difficult circumstances.
“Ashton means a lot to this group, and contributes a lot more than just the runs he scores.”
Perth will begin their 2022-23 KFC Big Bash League campaign against Sydney Sixers at Optus Stadium on Saturday 17 December, in a grand final rematch themed ‘Home of the Champions’.
