The Brisbane Heat has been pushing the positive message of recycling to its fanbase this summer as it welcomes Containers for Change Queensland as the ‘Official Recycling Partner of the Brisbane Heat and Queensland Cricket.’

Containers for Change is Queensland’s container refund scheme that rewards community members with a 10 cent refund for eligible bottles and cans that are returned to a Containers for Change refund point.

Containers for Change has reported more than 5.9 billion drink containers have been returned since the scheme launched in November 2018, refunding more than $590 million to Queenslanders, including millions to charities and community groups.

Containers for Change spokesperson Sam Nicholson says the Containers for Change partnership with the Brisbane Heat has been a hit in a huge summer for the scheme.

“We’ve had our signature green Containers for Change bins placed at all matches in Queensland this season, recycling more than 10,000 containers to raise over $1,000 for the Queensland Cricket Foundation at the first match in Cairns alone,”

“We’ve had record numbers of containers returned across Brisbane in the first weeks of January so it’s clear that whether it’s watching at home or at the match, Brisbane Heat fans are returning their containers to be recycled,”

“With bins at more stadiums and more events than ever before, we encourage everyone to do the right thing and put their empty bottles and cans into our green bins when you’re at the match to keep those refunds rising,” she said.

Dozens of the green Containers for Change bins will be available at every Brisbane Heat BBL match in Queensland this season, at the Gabba in Brisbane, Metricon Stadium at the Gold Coast, and Cazalys Stadium in Cairns.

There are more than 26,000 types of containers eligible for a 10-cent refund in Queensland, with a consultation survey currently open until 20 February to expand the scheme to include wine and spirit bottles

“We encourage all Queenslanders to have their say about expanding the scheme, and look forward to a fantastic 2023 with exciting partners like the Brisbane Heat helping fans of all ages to do the right thing with their containers,” she said.

Containers for Change has helped play a role in assisting the Queensland Cricket Foundation and grassroots cricket clubs fundraise while promoting the positive recycling message to cricket fans and community members.

Grassroots cricket clubs across Queensland have already raised over $90,000 for their clubs by fundraising with container collection.

Brisbane Heat CEO Terry Svenson welcomed Containers for Change into the club’s partner family.

“The Containers for Change message is one we are proud to support and promote to our fans this summer. With the Heat’s fanbase comprising of families and kids, it is important we are being positive role models in the community, and this is certainly another way for us to send a great message.

“We also welcome the opportunity to raise valuable funds for the Queensland Cricket Foundation so we can reinvest back into the community and make a positive impact.

“Thank you to the Containers for Change team for your support this summer.”

Clubs can get started in their fundraising journey by accessing the Containers for Change toolkit for charities and community groups.
