The iconic DP World Wanderers Stadium plays host to the second Betway Test Match between South Africa and West Indies from 8 – 12 March 2023. In celebration of International Women’s Day, it was treasured DP World Lions superstar Ayabonga Khaka who got play underway, with the ringing of the DP World Wanderers Stadium bell.

The highly accomplished 30-year-old right-arm medium bowler says it is her honour to ring the bell and join the list of greats having done the same;

“I live my life through the saying by George Halas which says “Nobody who ever gave his best regretted it.” I would like to encourage all women out there, to always give of your best from start to finish, for the sky is the limit. Thank you for this opportunity and the privilege to ring the bell. I acknowledge the honour and this special moment that embraces the diversity within cricket.”

Lions Cricket CEO Jono Leaf-Wright says that for the Lions brand, having Khaka start play is not only a fitting celebration of the strides made thus far for women, yet also a time to reflect on the efforts made for inclusivity, diversity and equality for all;

“Here at Lions Cricket, we work tirelessly in ensuring a unity from bottom through to top – we should all play on level playing fields. Ayabonga ringing the bell on Wednesday was symbolic not only of our appreciation of the women in our society, but also on the power of dreams: To all the young ladies out there, keep dreaming, DREAM BIG – you can achieve anything you set your minds to – just ask Aya.”
