The Melbourne Stars have announced a squad of 12 players for next week’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander T20 Cup.
The Stars will compete against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sides representing the Melbourne Renegades, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder during a three-day carnival to be staged in Albury, commencing on Friday, 31st March.
With 6 new faces, the Stars return to the tournament for the second time, after making their debut in the tournament last year, where they finished runners-up.
Jamie Jewiss, who coached the side last year, returns to take the reins again in 2023.
“It’s an honour to coach the Melbourne Stars Indigenous side for the second time this year.
“We formed so many connections last year and it’s great to see so many of the guys back this year, you could see the emotion from a lot of the younger boys who are still learning about their families and their histories.
“Hopefully we can have a successful tournament and can go one better this year.”
The Stars will wear their inaugural Indigenous Jersey, designed by Ky-ya Ward, a 20 year old Wurundjeri and Dja Dja Wurrung woman. Information on the design can be found below.
The star on the back represents Stars country, which is where Bunjil (the wedge tailed eagle) our creator spirit lives. The surrounding smaller stars represent the players of the Stars, coming from all different paths and places in life, but all being connected through cricket. The blue effect running through the centre represents the Birrarung (Yarra River) which is a very significant river to my people. The circles in the middle of the design represent the Stars family.
