The Sydney Sixers are set to kick off the WBBL summer for a third year in a row, hosting the Melbourne Stars at the home of women’s cricket in Australia – the iconic North Sydney Oval – to open Weber WBBL|09.
Launching into last season with a bang, Maitlan Brown set Great Barrier Reef Arena alight in the first match of the summer when she sealed a momentous victory for the Sixers.
Requiring five runs from the final two balls against the Brisbane Heat, Brown sent six over the rope from her first delivery faced, sending the magenta bench into mayhem, and kicking the Sixers season off in style.
The season-opening clash will be followed by the highly anticipated Sydney Smash at North Sydney Oval, with cross-town rivals the Sixers and Thunder going head-to-head on Sunday, October 22.

Of their two meetings last season, the Sixers were victorious over the Stars on both occasions, first taking the points in Mackay, and later on the Stars home turf in Melbourne.
The Stars are set to be headlined this season by Australian representatives, Kim Garth and Annabel Sutherland, while this summer will also see the return the WBBL|08 MVP and the league’s leading wicket-taker, Ashleigh Gardner for the Sixers, with the 25-year-old signing on for three more years in magenta ahead of last season’s Final.
Setting a new record for number of wins in a regular WBBL season, the Sixers made history posting 11 consecutive victories in WBBL|08 under the guidance of new Head Coach, Charlotte Edwards.
With Edwards at the helm, the Sixers bounced back from bottom of the ladder the year prior, to top the of the WBBL table, reclaiming their status as the powerhouse of the competition.
