Superstar Ellyse Perry, her Sydney Sixers teammate Maitlan Brown and their cross-town Sydney Thunder rivals Heather Knight and Phoebe Litchfield have taken the Weber WBBL to new heights with a game of cricket on the roof of the iconic SCG’s Victor Trumper Stand to promote the WBBL Stadium Series.
The Sixers and Thunder will square off in the second and final Sydney Smash of the WBBL season at the SCG next Sunday (November 26) with the stars putting aside their rivalry for a few hours to challenge members, fans and indeed all Sydneysiders to come together and help them break the all-time WBBL crowd record of 15,511.
The match, the second of a double header following the Adelaide Strikers vs Hobart Hurricanes fixture, will also feature a special Live Interactive Experience with Australia’s favourite blue heeler, Bluey and her sister Bingo in front of the Dally Messenger Stand, as well as a fan experience on the field post-match to the tunes of acclaimed producer, Young Franco.
Ellyse Perry said the opportunity to set a new WBBL crowd record was one the WBBL in Sydney was ready for.
“It would be wonderful to break the (WBBL crowd) record,” Perry said.
“Given how important this competition is to all of us and how much we’d love to see it continue to progress, to set a new benchmark in terms of crowds at the ground would be awesome.
“It’s certainly shown how far the (WBBL) competition’s come and how exciting it is too, as an opportunity I guess, to set a benchmark for where we want to take the competition as well and have lots more of these stadium fixtures and big crowds.”
The Sixers captain said it is exciting to see much more than just the cricket, providing fans with something for everyone.
“I think it’s going to be a great day out all around. Some really awesome cricket, but to be able to have Bluey beforehand and then Young Franco after the match should be lots of fun and I know the players will be sticking around to watch Young Franco perform that’s for sure.
“To be able to step out onto the field after the game, for fans, it’s some pretty cool turf out there. It’s a bit like carpet so take your shoes off and walk around.”
Thunder and Australian rising star Phobe Litchfield said just playing on the SCG was going to be incredible.
“It’s going to be awesome to play the Sixers at the SCG,” Litchfield said.
“It’s a game that we’ve had in the books for a while and we are so keen to get out there.
“It’s going to be an awesome crowd and an awesome spectacle.”
Litchfield said the roof-top experience was one she wished she could have shared but never dreamed she would have.
“I wanted to FaceTime my mum and dad and say ‘hey, guess where I am’. It was pretty cool and it was a great view. It’s one thing to tick off my bucket list, although it was probably never on my bucket list.”
