David Turnbull from Jandakot Lakes Junior Cricket Club is the deserving winner of the national Community Cricket Coach of the Year award for 2023-24.

Turnbull was among several Western Australians honoured in the National Community Cricket Awards which celebrate the amazing contribution and tireless work of the volunteers at the heart of grassroots cricket.

Coinciding with National Volunteer Week, the annual awards include 15 categories, recognising individuals, clubs, and associations that have exhibited excellence in their roles and made a positive impact in the communities they serve.

In his first season of coaching, Turnbull took a group of Year 9 Boys who hadn’t played cricket together before and won the South West Metropolitan Junior Cricket Council U15 T20 Flag.

“We had a lot of really close games where it came down to the last over, we just had plenty of magic moments throughout the season,” Turnbull says.

Turnbull says winning the National Community Coach of the Year award is a humbling experience but one that gives him a sense of pride.

“It’s definitely been a bit a surprise,” he says.

“It has been a great personal achievement, I’m sure the award could have gone to a vast number of different people, but it gives a real personal sense of accomplishment.”

For those thinking of becoming a volunteer in the upcoming cricket season, Turnbull says it’s a great way to spend time with your kids.

“If you are in a position to volunteer and give back to your community, then definitely get out there and have a go,” he says.

Turnbull was presented with his award by Perth Scorchers fast bowler Jason Behrendorff, with the proud teacher’s students’ watching on.

WA produced further winners, including Wembley Districts Junior Cricket Club & Central Junior Cricket Association Kristen Piccinini named NRMA Insurance Volunteer of the Year.

White Knights Baldivis Cricket Club walked away the winner of the HCL Tech Women and Girls Initiative of the year award.

WA Cricket would also like to extend its congratulations to Busselton Margaret River Junior Cricket Association Matthew Braid who was highly commended in the Cricket Blast Coordinator of the Year category, along with Wembley Districts Junior Cricket Club Ava Danholt in the Young Leader of the Year category.

WA Cricket General Manager – Community Cricket Jo Davies says National Volunteer Week is the country’s largest annual celebration of volunteering and recognises the important role volunteers play in community cricket and among the wider community.

“We can’t thank our amazing volunteers enough for all they do in community cricket,” Davies says.

“Our volunteers, across all levels, are the lifeblood of cricket in the community, and their commitment to encouraging and supporting young players is incredible.

“This National Volunteer’s Week, we extend a massive round of applause to all volunteers.”
