Former Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram declined the offer to become the CEO of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) due to personal commitments. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi created this role, similar to an advisory position, to delegate certain cricketing matters to a former cricketer.
Naqvi faced criticism for neglecting his role as PCB Chairman since he also serves as the Federal Minister of Interior.
The CEO role involves overseeing all cricket-related matters in Pakistan, making it a full-time position. Akram’s commitments as a commentator, pundit, and frequent travel to Australia, as well as his preference to stay in Karachi, led to his decision. However, Akram mentioned in a meeting with Naqvi that he would be happy to assist Pakistan cricket unofficially without compensation.
The PCB then turned to former cricketer Waqar Younis, who accepted the role and began his stint on August 1. Waqar, who has previously served in the Pakistan coaching staff, was seen as an experienced individual capable of making the right decisions. Waqar will also address matters or assignments deemed appropriate by the PCB Chairman.
Pakistan’s next international assignment is a two-match Test series against Bangladesh as part of the 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
