In recent developments regarding IPL 2025, reports indicate that the BCCI will continue with the mega-auctions despite objections from several teams. According to reports, the Roger Binny-led board is considering increasing the retention limit to up to 6 players, including the Right To Match (RTM) option. However, the BCCI is not inclined to eliminate the mega-auction, as suggested by some teams during the meeting at BCCI headquarters on July 31.
There has been ongoing debate about the mega-auctions, with some teams expressing concerns about losing talent they have scouted and having to rebuild their squads from scratch. Despite these concerns, the BCCI is set on maintaining the tradition of the mega-auction.
In 2022, the BCCI allowed only four player retention and did not provide an RTM option. The recent meeting also addressed issues such as gaming rights, merchandise, and the impact player rule.
Reports suggested some division among IPL owners over the mega-auction, including an alleged altercation between SRK and Punjab Kings’ co-owner Ness Wadia, although Wadia has denied these reports.
