Irish cricket legend will be sorely missed
It is with great sadness that I add my voice to the many messages of condolence being shared regarding the passing of Dougie Goodwin.
Irish Cricket Hall of Famer, Dougie Goodwin, will be forever paired with another of our Hall of Famers, Alec O’Riordan, as the duo who demolished the West Indies for 25 at Sion Mills in 1969. Goodwin bowled brilliantly in helpful conditions to return figures of 12.3-8-6-5, and took two more wickets for one run in the second innings.
It was no flash in the pan, Goodwin’s career spanning 43 matches from 1965-75, in which he took 115 wickets. He took 5-68 against Australia in 1968, and captained Ireland 19 times, with seven wins and just four defeats.
A long-time member of Malahide Cricket Club, I believe that there wasn’t a prouder person than Dougie on the opening day of the inaugural Ireland Men’s Test match when his two cricket passions – Ireland and Malahide – came together for what was a memorable occasion.
Dougie will be greatly missed, and on behalf of Cricket Ireland I would like to pass on our deepest condolences to Dougie’s family and friends.
Rest in peace, Dougie.
Yours sincerely
