One of the most decorated players in Weber Women’s Big Bash League history, Sophie Devine, has committed to Perth Scorchers for another two years.

Devine, who skippered the Scorchers’ title-winning WBBL|07 team, is the first WBBL Scorcher secured under new rules that allow each Club to sign one international player before the Overseas Player Draft next month.

The 34-year-old was dominant throughout WBBL|10, blasting 489 runs at 39.66 with an impressive strike rate of 140.92, earning her selection in the WBBL Team of the Tournament for the third time.

Her versatility with the ball was also on show, finishing with 14 wickets at 24.85 including a best of 3-20 against the Adelaide Strikers.

Named Player of the Match on four separate occasions during WBBL|09, Devine’s season peaked with a brilliant 106 not out off just 62 balls against Brisbane Heat at Allan Border Field.

Meantime, her overall Scorchers record – 1573 runs at 34.19 from 55 games – is bettered only by Beth Mooney (2089) and Elyse Villani (1706).

Often regarded as one of the best leaders in the WBBL, the 34-year-old was named captain of the WBBL Team of the Tournament for the second time last season.

Reflecting on signing with the Scorchers, Devine said:

“I’m absolutely stoked to be returning to the Scorchers for the next two seasons.

“For me, coming back to Perth was a no brainer. I have built such a special connection with the players and staff over the past four seasons, and I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else.

“Winning the WBBL|07 title in front of our fans at Optus Stadium will always be a special memory for me, and something the whole group is incredibly motivated to achieve again.
“Last season didn’t finish the way we would have liked, but I know we have the talent and confidence within the playing group to make WBBL|10 one to remember.”

Perth Scorchers General Manager – High Performance Cricket and Elite Teams, Kade Harvey said:

“We’re obviously thrilled that Soph will be part of our Scorchers squad for the next two seasons, she has brought so much value on and off the field during her time with us and continues to be an incredible leader for this group.

“From a list management perspective, she is one of the premium allrounders in the Women’s game, so locking her into a multi-year deal was a straightforward decision.

“She produced several standout performances for us last season and she was a key reason behind our return to the finals, we can’t wait to welcome her back into the fold this year.”

The Scorchers will begin their Weber WBBL|10 campaign with a prime-time clash against Melbourne Stars at the WACA Ground on Sunday 27 October.
