India has appointed former South African pacer Morne Morkel as their new bowling coach. Morkel is set to officially join head coach Gautam Gambhir’s staff next month, according to local media.
Morkel stepped down from his role as Pakistan’s bowling coach in November last year, shortly after Pakistan finished fifth in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India.
The 39-year-old previously played alongside Gambhir for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League and was part of Gambhir’s coaching staff at Lucknow Super Giants.
Indian media reported on Wednesday that Indian cricket board secretary Jay Shah confirmed Morkel’s appointment.
Morkel’s first assignment will be the Test series against Bangladesh, starting on September 19 in Chennai. He will join Gambhir’s coaching team, which includes Abhishek Nayar, Ryan ten Doeschate, and fielding coach T. Dilip.
Gambhir, who replaced Rahul Dravid as head coach last month, led India to a 3-0 victory over Sri Lanka in their T20 series in Pallekele, though India later lost the subsequent ODI series 2-0 in Colombo.
