Jay Shah on India’s Champions Trophy participation in Pakistan: “We’ll address it when the time comes”

Must Read

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is preparing to host the ICC Champions Trophy, but the tournament’s future is uncertain due to the BCCI’s indecision about sending the Indian team to Pakistan. India’s absence would significantly affect the event’s success, causing concern for both the PCB and the ICC.

The PCB faced a similar issue during the 2022 Asia Cup when India refused to travel to Pakistan. As a result of the BCCI’s influence, the tournament was conducted in a hybrid model, with key matches moved to Sri Lanka. This precedent has increased concerns about the Champions Trophy.

Political tensions and security concerns have prevented India from touring Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup, affecting the likelihood of India participating in the Champions Trophy. The PCB aims to avoid a repeat of the hybrid model used for the Asia Cup and has told the ICC that changes to the Champions Trophy schedule are unacceptable.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has stated that a decision on India’s participation in the Champions Trophy has not yet been made and will be considered at the appropriate time.

The BCCI’s indecision has created uncertainty for Pakistan, as the tournament’s success largely depends on India’s participation.

“No decision has been finalized yet. No stand as of now. We will cross the bridge when it comes,” Jay Shah told Times of India.

A standoff over the Champions Trophy could lead to major financial losses for the PCB and ICC. If India withdraws and the PCB insists on hosting in Pakistan, Sri Lanka might be considered as an alternative host.
