Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has been sidelined with an ankle injury from the 2023 ODI World Cup. After surgery, he is recovering at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, where he has resumed bowling, but no return date has been set.

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar previously suggested that Shami might return to the Indian team for the two-Test series against Bangladesh next month.

“September 19 is the first Test and that was always the goal. I don’t know if that is his timeline for recovery, will have to ask the guys at the NCA about that,” he said before India’s July tour of Sri Lanka.

In an interview, Jay Shah confirmed that Shami is anticipated to be fit and return for the five-match Test series against Australia later this year. The Indian team has won the last two Border-Gavaskar Trophies in Australia and aims to maintain that success.

“Our team is already well prepared. We have rested Jasprit Bumrah for a while now. Mohammad Shami is expected to be fit too. This is an experienced Indian side now. Seniors like Rohit and Kohli are fit,” Shah said.

“Your question about Shami is right… he will be there because he is experienced, and we need him in Australia,” the BCCI secretary added.

Shami will need to demonstrate his form in domestic cricket before being considered for the Indian team for the Australia series. According to a PTI report, he has not been selected for the upcoming Duleep Trophy due to concerns about his fitness in time for the tournament.
