Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan praised the IPL‘s governing body, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), for introducing a two-year ban rule for players who declare unavailability after being selected in the auction.

The IPL announced that any player who withdraws despite being picked in the auction will face a two-year suspension.

Cricketer-turned-commentator Irfan Pathan expressed his approval of this rule, calling it a positive step for shaping the tournament.

“Last two years I kept talking abt this. it’s Great to see the decision taken by @BCCI! Players who declare unavailability after being picked in the auction will now face a two-year ban. The IPL is getting stronger in many ways” wrote Pathan on his ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).

The IPL governing council has announced significant updates for the 2025 season, including an increased player retention limit, the return of the Right-to-Match (RTM) option, and a larger auction purse, according to reports.

Franchises can now retain up to six players, with the RTM option reinstated, and the Impact Player rule will remain in place. The auction purse for the upcoming mega auction has been increased to INR 120 crore (approximately US$14.33 million), a rise of INR 20 crore from the previous year.

It is also reported that the finalized retention rules will soon be shared with the ten franchises. Of the six players that can be retained, at least one must be an uncapped Indian player, while the remaining five can be either Indian or overseas players. Retentions can occur through direct retention, a combination of retention and RTM, or solely through RTM options.
