South African batter Reeza Hendricks fetched the highest price at the SA20 Season 3 auction held in Cape Town on October 1. MI Cape Town (MICT) secured Hendricks for R4.3 million after a bidding war with Pretoria Capitals. Hendricks, who previously played for Joburg Super Kings (JSK), was the auction’s central focus.

MI Cape Town also added Colin Ingram (R175,000) and Dane Piedt (R175,000) to their squad.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC), led by Aiden Markram, picked up pacers Okuhle Cele for R175,000 and Richard Gleeson, who played for Durban Super Giants (DSG) last season, for R2.3 million. DSG, who recently appointed Allan Donald to their coaching staff, acquired West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph for R425,000.

Pretoria Capitals signed West Indian opener Evin Lewis (R1.5 million), Marques Ackerman (R80,000), and all-rounder Kyle Simmons (R175,000). JSK recruited Wihan Lubbe and Evan Jones at their base prices of R175,000, while wicketkeeper-batter Rubin Hermann (R175,000) was the only pick for Paarl Royals.

A total of 580 players were auctioned to fill 13 slots. SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith commented, “I think all six teams look very strong. From a League perspective, we want to see all six squads competitive. It’s a nice mix of quality South Africans and top international names joining us for Season 3.”

Smith emphasized the importance of strengthening South African cricket, noting, “We saw that progression last year with players like Ottneil Baartman, and we hope to see more emerging talent.”

Rookies Tristan Luus (MI Cape Town) and Dewan Marais (Paarl Royals) were also picked during the auction. Smith highlighted the importance of the rookie segment, stating, “The Rookie element has been a valuable addition, providing a pathway and opportunities for young players.”

The third edition of SA20 will begin on January 9, 2025, with SEC facing MICT at St George’s Park in Gqeberha.
