Australia captain Pat Cummins has responded to the new rule introduced by the BCCI concerning overseas players in the IPL. Under the new regulation, if overseas players withdraw from the league after being purchased by franchises, they will face a two-year ban. Only players with legitimate medical or fitness concerns will be exempt from this rule.
Cummins noted that the rule wouldn’t have affected him in the past. He explained that he has never pulled out of the IPL after being auctioned. However, he expressed uncertainty about participating in future IPL seasons, stating that Test cricket and World Cups remain his top priorities.
“The rules have changed, but I don’t know whether that would have impacted me in the past. I have never pulled out after being bought. However, there is one more factor to be considered regarding the IPL. Test cricket is my number one priority, and the World Cups are right up there. I think you need to work out what makes sense around that,” Cummins said.
In IPL 2024, Cummins captained Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to the finals, where they were defeated by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The 31-year-old has committed to leading Australia in Tests and ODIs until at least 2027.
“I can lead for a bit long. It is good to have some wonderful people around, but that might change as younger guys will come into the team in the next few years.
“I am not going to be around forever, but 2027 is the goal. I wouldn’t say it is imminent that I am going to step away, but 2027 is the big question, but it is a long way away,” he added.
Cummins is set to captain Australia in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India.
