Former Pakistan cricketer Kamran Akmal has urged Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to engage with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure India’s participation in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
Speaking to ARY News, Akmal suggested that Nawaz Sharif should use his rapport with Modi to persuade him to allow the Indian team to tour Pakistan.
“Nawaz Sharif should convince Modi to come. He [Modi] has visited his [Nawaz Sharif’s] house in Lahore and has a good understanding with the Indian PM,” Akmal said.
Akmal further highlighted Modi’s potential role in facilitating India’s participation in the tournament, emphasizing the importance of his decision in resolving the matter.
Earlier this month, Nawaz Sharif also called on India to tour Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025. While speaking to journalists in London, the former prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining positive relations with all countries.
“Pakistan should have good relationships with the United States and also with its neighbouring countries,” Sharif said, expressing hope for improved ties that could encourage India to send its cricket team to Pakistan.
Sharif emphasized the need for fostering strong relations with neighboring nations, expressing optimism that India would soon agree to visit Pakistan for the event.
Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has scheduled a board meeting on November 29 to address issues related to the tournament.
The meeting was convened after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) declined to send its team to Pakistan for the event, slated for February-March 2025.
In response, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), following government directives, formally rejected the proposed hybrid model for hosting the tournament and sought a written explanation from the BCCI for its refusal to tour Pakistan.
