The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), and the International Cricket Council (ICC) are reportedly nearing a resolution regarding the venue dispute for the ICC Champions Trophy.
The controversy began when the BCCI refused to send the Indian cricket team to Pakistan, leading the PCB to reject the hybrid model proposed by the BCCI, resulting in a stalemate.
In an attempt to break the deadlock, the ICC convened an emergency board meeting to propose a hybrid model for the tournament. While the PCB initially held firm on its opposition to the model, it recognized the potential repercussions if India were to withdraw from the event. The meeting ended without consensus, prompting the ICC to postpone further discussions.
If no agreement is reached, the ICC may resort to a voting process where all member boards will decide on the proposed hybrid model. According to a report by Geo Sports, the ICC is exploring a new “partnership formula” to resolve the issue.
Under this proposal, India and Pakistan would not play matches in each other’s countries during ICC tournaments for the next three years, with Dubai serving as a neutral venue for their encounters. This arrangement would be included in the host agreement for both teams, and the new approach would not be referred to as a hybrid model but under a different name.
“The cricket governing body is trying its best to resolve the matter without voting, which could take place if the PCB, ICC, and BCCI do not reach a consensus,” a source told Geo News, according to MSN. The report also suggests a strong likelihood that the issue will be resolved before voting becomes necessary.
“It is quite possible that the need for a board meeting does not arise if the three parties reach an agreement over a formula. The other board members would likely be informed of the formula afterwards. The formula’s name will not be hybrid though,” sources added.
