The ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 situation has garnered support for the PCB from Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif. The Prime Minister met with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and expressed his backing for Naqvi’s stance on the prestigious 50-over tournament.
A decision on the hosting rights for Champions Trophy 2025 is still pending, but reports indicate that both the ICC and PCB have agreed to the BCCI‘s request for a hybrid model. However, the PCB has outlined several conditions, including ensuring an equal playing field and adopting a similar hybrid model for future events to be hosted by India.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister has expressed his support for Naqvi’s approach. “Your stance on the Champions Trophy is the voice of every Pakistani. Pakistan’s honor comes first, and everything else follows,” PM Shehbaz Sharif stated during the meeting with Naqvi.
In response, Naqvi assured the Prime Minister that the PCB would not bow to pressure from the BCCI and ICC. “The PCB is fully prepared to host the Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan,” Naqvi replied.
The ICC’s meeting, initially scheduled for December 7, 2024, was postponed once again due to the BCCI’s silence. The latest reports suggest that the PCB is requesting a written guarantee from the ICC to ensure that the hybrid hosting model is successfully implemented in future tournaments. Additionally, delays in the release of the Champions Trophy schedule are attributed to logistical issues, leaving the fixture announcement date uncertain.
