Sri Lanka’s sports minister has instructed the state-run Bank of Ceylon to pay overdue wages to national cricketers, who have gone unpaid for over a year, according to a statement released on Friday.
Following multiple discussions involving Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, the bank, and Sri Lanka Cricket, the Bank of Ceylon has agreed to disburse 600 million rupees ($5 million) to cover the outstanding payments.
“Minister Aluthgamage also instructed the officials of Sri Lanka Cricket not to overlook contract payments in the future,” the statement noted.
Sri Lanka Cricket has been unable to pay its players due to debts amounting to $69 million, primarily from constructing two new stadiums and renovating a third for the World Cup.
Since their loss in the 2011 World Cup final to India, Sri Lanka has suffered defeats in Test and one-day series against England, Australia, Pakistan, and South Africa.
