Cricket Australia is set to incur a loss of Rs 5.4 crore (AUD 1 million) in gate receipts after being forced to issue full refunds for tickets sold for the rain-affected opening day of the Gabba Test between India and Australia. Only 13.2 overs were bowled on Saturday due to heavy rainfall, despite the day being a complete sellout.
According to CA rules, a minimum of 15 overs must be bowled to make fans ineligible for a full refund. Falling just 10 balls short of the required quota, CA now faces significant financial losses.
“It turns out, a minimum of 15 overs is required to prevent fans being eligible for a full refund on tickets, meaning Cricket Australia was 10 balls away from potentially saving itself more than $1 million in refunds,” news.com.au reported.
The opening day saw an official attendance of 30,145 fans, who endured challenging conditions as “a reported 40mm [of rain] fell at the ground at one stage in just one hour,” the website added.
