With spin legend R. Ashwin announcing his retirement from international cricket, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla commended his outstanding contributions to the sport.
“Today, R Ashwin has announced his retirement. His contribution to world cricket, to Indian cricket is immense. This should be appreciated by everyone,” Shukla told ANI.
He highlighted that the BCCI recognizes and honors Ashwin’s significant impact on international cricket, particularly his stellar performances in domestic cricket. Praising Ashwin, Shukla added, “He is a phenomenal bowler with remarkable potential in the game. I extend my best wishes to him for his future endeavors.”
Since his debut in 2011, R. Ashwin has played 106 Test matches for India, amassing 537 wickets and leading the team to numerous victories. He has achieved five or more wickets in an innings 37 times, making him the second cricketer in Test history to accomplish this feat. Beyond his bowling excellence, Ashwin has also contributed 3,503 runs in Tests, including six centuries and 14 half-centuries.
In ODIs, Ashwin has proven his versatility as an all-rounder, scoring 707 runs and taking 156 wickets in 116 matches. His ability to deliver in crucial moments made him an invaluable asset to the Indian team.
Ashwin has also represented India in 65 T20 matches, claiming 72 wickets. His consistency and skill were instrumental in India’s success in major tournaments, including the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.
