BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla strongly criticized Cricket Australia for excluding Sunil Gavaskar from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy presentation after the Sydney Test. Shukla pointed out that the prestigious trophy is named after both Gavaskar and Allan Border.
Despite Gavaskar’s direct connection to the trophy, he was absent from the presentation ceremony following Australia’s victory at the Sydney Cricket Ground, marking their first Border-Gavaskar Trophy win in a decade.
This omission occurred after Australia secured their series victory, which also confirmed their spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Social media users, including commentator Neil Mitchell, expressed disappointment over Gavaskar’s absence from the event.
“Sunil Gavaskar seems a lovely man. Humble, for a cricketing genius. How on earth could Cricket Australia not have him present the trophy with AB? It is an appalling and embarrassing error,” Mitchell wrote on social media.
Shukla echoed Mitchell’s sentiments, saying, “I fully agree with Neil. It happened when Gavaskar was present in the stadium. The trophy is in their names, and one of them was not invited to the podium. After four years, who knows whether both will be present at the stadium? Both together would have been a rare visual.”

With the series loss, India’s hopes of qualifying for the WTC final ended, while Australia will now defend their WTC title against South Africa this June at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
