The Perth Scorchers are gearing up for an exciting, new-look 2020 rebel Women’s Big Bash League campaign in Sydney after Cricket Australia today announced the full 59-game fixture, and creation of a WBBL Village in Sydney Olympic Park.
The Scorchers open their campaign on Sunday 25 October against defending champions the Brisbane Heat, with boom recruit Beth Mooney set for an early opportunity against her former club.
Perth fans will witness last season’s WBBL Player of the Tournament and new Scorchers skipper Sophie Devine face up against her old team, the Adelaide Strikers, in a semi-final re-match on Sunday 1 November.
All eyes will be on a prime-time Saturday evening blockbuster on 7 November, as the Scorchers take on former skipper Meg Lanning’s Melbourne Stars, the first of five broadcast matches featuring the Scorchers this season.
Supporters will be able to watch a livestream of every other Scorchers match on the Cricket Australia Live App and via cricket.com.au as the team looks to secure a record fifth finals appearance.
The WBBL Village will see parts of Sydney Olympic Park transform into a high-class athletes’ precinct for all eight teams and staff, providing exclusive use of multiple hotels, high performance facilities, dining venues and more.
In other great news for the Scorchers, hard-hitting batters Megan Banting and Mathilda Carmichael, and 18-year-old newcomer Georgia Wyllie have all put pen to paper for the season ahead.
Perth Scorchers Head Coach Shelley Nitschke said;
“The WBBL season will definitely be a unique experience for all, we can’t wait to get to Sydney and open the tournament against the defending champions.
“The Sydney Village presents an incredible opportunity for the squad and coaching staff to bond and grow as a team, we’re excited for what can be achieved by our group.
“While we’re disappointed we won’t be able to play WBBL matches in Perth this season, we respect the decision taken by the League in these challenging times.
“We know our incredible Members and fans will be supporting us from back home.
“We’re really pleased with how the team is shaping up and we’ll have our final international signings in the coming week to complete the squad. I think we’re well set up to be very competitive this season.”
