The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to retain Aaqib Javed as part of the national selection committee despite his appointment as interim head coach for both the white-ball and Test teams.

While his coaching role is temporary, the PCB has confirmed that Aaqib will continue to participate in player selections, although his influence as a selector has recently diminished. Other selectors, such as Azhar Ali and Aleem Dar, have taken on more prominent roles.

Aaqib’s reduced influence coincided with his appointment as red-ball head coach after Jason Gillespie’s resignation ahead of the South Africa Test series. The PCB later clarified that Aaqib would retain his selector role alongside his coaching duties to avoid confusion about his responsibilities.

The PCB is actively searching for permanent head coaches for both formats and intends to finalize these appointments before the Champions Trophy. However, the board is unlikely to consider foreign candidates for these roles in the near future.

Earlier this year, Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie served as head coaches for the white-ball and red-ball teams, respectively, with both holding positions on the selection committee and having the final say in team selections.

Following disappointing performances in the World T20 Cup and a home series loss to Bangladesh, the PCB restructured the selection committee. Aaqib, Azhar Ali, and Aleem Dar assumed greater authority, while Kirsten and Gillespie were relieved of their responsibilities.

The PCB’s decision to keep Aaqib in dual roles highlights their strategy to maintain stability while planning for long-term coaching solutions. This approach aims to address immediate team requirements and future challenges in international cricket.
