South Africa’s Captain Aiden Markram reflected on the eve of the T20 Men’s World Cup final in Barbados about the critical role that the Betway SA20 has played in propelling the men’s game forward in South Africa.
The Betway SA20 was organized by Cricket South Africa (CSA) and its inaugural season was in 2023.
Said Markram: “The SA 20 has been fantastic for cricket in South Africa. We’ve seen what the IPL has done for cricket in India from an exposure point of view for players. Ideally the SA20 is going to achieve the same thing for cricket in South Africa.”
There are 6 teams in the CSA, all owned by Indian corporations that also own the corresponding IPL team of the same name:
MI Cape Town Cape Town
Durban’s Super Giants
Joburg Super Kings
Paarl Royals
Pretoria Capitals
Sunrisers Eastern Cape
Markram continued: “It has been great, we’ve seen quite a few more South Africans are getting picked up around the world in various leagues. So you’d like to think that essentially it’s going to play a big role moving forward but already in its 2 years of existence it has already played a big role.”
Both seasons of the SA20 were won by the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, of which Markram is the captain.
