Newly-appointed ICC Chairman Jay Shah is in Brisbane to attend a meeting related to the 2032 Olympics. Shah arrived on Thursday and is expected to meet the Indian cricket team, which is in Brisbane for the third Test against Australia at the Gabba. Shah’s visit coincides with ongoing uncertainty over the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, adding intrigue to his presence.
Shah, who was instrumental in securing cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics after more than a century, is reportedly working to ensure the sport’s inclusion in the 2032 Brisbane Games as well.
Sources close to Republic World suggest an announcement regarding the hybrid model for the Champions Trophy could be imminent. The model would allow India to play its matches outside Pakistan, possibly in Dubai, while the PCB would host the remaining fixtures.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) faces significant challenges if it withdraws from the Champions Trophy. Potential revenue losses, legal disputes, and isolation from the cricketing community are among the risks. A senior cricket administrator familiar with ICC event planning told PTI that rejecting the hybrid model entirely would not be an easy decision for the PCB.
Last week, the ICC reached a consensus to hold the Champions Trophy under a hybrid model, allowing India to play its matches in Dubai while agreeing “in principle” to similar arrangements for multi-lateral events until 2027. However, a formal announcement has yet to be made.
