Andrew Richardson has stepped down as the head coach of the Canadian national cricket team, ending his short but impactful tenure. The announcement came just one day before Canada’s crucial match against Scotland in Vancouver during their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 campaign.
Richardson’s time as head coach, which began in March, lasted only eight months. Under his leadership, Canada achieved significant successes, including a historic series win over Zimbabwe in T20Is and a strong performance in the ICC T20 World Cup, where the team advanced to the Super-Eights stage for the first time in history after victories against Sri Lanka and Ireland.
In a press release, Cricket Canada President Arjun Patel stated, “Andrew has been instrumental in elevating our team’s performance and helping us achieve milestones that were previously out of reach. However, after careful consideration, we believe a change in leadership is necessary to align with our future goals.”
Richardson, reflecting on his departure, expressed gratitude towards the players and support staff, saying, “Coaching Canada has been an incredible journey. I am proud of what we have achieved together and wish the team continued success in their upcoming challenges.”
“Andrew has been a driving force behind some of our most memorable achievements, but this change is essential as we prepare for the future,” Patel added.
Canada currently sits third in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 points table with five wins in ten matches, still firmly in the race for a spot in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
As Cricket Canada begins its search for a new head coach, assistant coach Michael Hayes will take over interim coaching responsibilities, ensuring continuity as the team prepares for future competitions.
Richardson concluded, “It has been a privilege to coach Canada. I leave confident in the team’s potential to reach even greater heights.”
