Veteran Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin praised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for implementing the Decision Review System (DRS) in domestic cricket.

In a post on his social media (X account), Ashwin noted that the introduction of DRS could help batters refine their technique, which would benefit them as they progress to international cricket.

Using the example of Ricky Bhui’s dismissal against Manav Suthar in the Duleep Trophy 2024, Ashwin pointed out a significant technical flaw by the batter that might have been overlooked without the use of DRS.

The batter attempted to defend the delivery with his bat behind the pad. What appeared to be a standard defensive shot ended up being costly, as he was dismissed leg-before wicket (LBW).

Ashwin noted that with the bat behind the pad, the batter would likely have been given not out in the pre-DRS era. However, with advanced cameras and ultra-edge technology, the third umpire can now determine if the batter nicked the ball or struck the pad first.

He believes that this technical flaw could become a persistent issue and potentially jeopardize the batter’s place in the national team if not addressed early in his career.

In the Duleep Trophy, India C is in a strong position, needing 124 runs to win with eight wickets remaining. Meanwhile, India A is struggling, trailing by 113 runs with two wickets left in their first innings.

Ashwin is expected to return to action as Team India prepares for the home Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand. He will need to be in peak form as the cricketing calendar progresses toward the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 in Australia.
