Former Auckland ACES Assistant Coach Doug Watson will return to the ACES set-up as the Head Coach of the Male Performance Programme for the next three years.
Watson will be no stranger to the Auckland cricket scene, having served as the ACES Assistant Coach for three years and helping lift the Ford Trophy title two summers ago.
The 48-year old will rejoin the ACES after a season as the Wellington Firebirds’ Specialist Batting coach.
Watson’s playing days made him a South African domestic legend, holding the honour of being the KwaZulu-Natal Dolphin’s all-time most capped player. He also represented South Africa A at the international level as a player and was the head coach of Namibia from 2012 to 2015.
Before arriving on New Zealand shores, Watson had coaching stints with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League and as head coach of the KwaZulu-Natal Inland.
Watson was excited to receive the news of his appointment.
“I am absolutely over the moon to be rejoining the Auckland ACES, this time in the role of Head Coach.
“I was speechless when I received the news; it feels so good to be coming home to work with a fantastic team.”
Watson also acknowledged the generosity of Cricket Wellington as he went through the recruitment process.
“I must also thank Cricket Wellington CEO Cameron Mitchell and Firebirds Head Coach Glenn Pocknall for releasing me from my contract to rejoin the ACES.
“Being a Head Coach is a wonderful opportunity to inspire and lead a group of people towards a common goal, build an excellent culture and work hard together.”
Director of Performance and Talent Daniel Archer is delighted to welcome Watson back to the Auckland Cricket fold.
“Doug brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role, supported by a deep connection with Auckland Cricket and many within the environment.
“We are excited by the passion, desire, and commitment Doug has displayed throughout the recruitment process, and we are all looking forward to his leadership upon return from his time with Wellington.”
Watson will join Auckland Cricket from June 1st, 2022.
