Members at the BCCI‘s 93rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Bengaluru on Sunday urged secretary Jay Shah to expedite the process of selecting his successor to ensure a smooth transition. Shah is expected to step down in the last week of November to become ICC chairman for a three-year term starting December 1.
Although the selection of a new secretary was not officially on the AGM agenda, attendees reportedly discussed the succession plan informally.
“It was a normal request to keep all due processes in place at the earliest as [then] there will be clarity for us,” a state association representative reported.
Currently, Rohan Jaitley (president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association), BCCI treasurer Ashish Shelar, joint-secretary Devajit Saikia, and Gujarat Cricket Association secretary Anil Patel are among those considered to succeed Shah.
The main agenda of the AGM was to nominate two representatives for ICC meetings. Presently, Shah represents BCCI on the ICC Board, while IPL chairman Arun Dhumal holds the position on the Chief Executives’ Committee.
The AGM tasked the general body with recommending two names for the posts soon.
Arun Dhumal and Avishek Dalmiya were elected to the IPL Governing Council (GC) as general body representatives, with Dhumal expected to continue as chairman until at least IPL 2025.
Former Andhra cricketer V Chamundeswarnath, nominated by the Indian Cricketers Association (ICA), was inducted into the IPL GC as a player representative.
The AGM also approved the 2024-25 annual budget and unanimously decided to maintain BCCI’s legal status as a society. Additionally, the members resolved that BCCI tournaments, including the IPL, will not be converted into a company, according to a BCCI statement.
