The BCCI may reintroduce a rule allowing retired players like MS Dhoni to be included in the uncapped category after five years.
The rule, in effect since the tournament’s first season in 2008, was abolished in 2021 due to lack of use by franchises. During a recent meeting between franchise owners and the BCCI, Chennai requested its reinstatement, but other franchises were not interested.
“There is a possibility of the rule coming back. It was discussed during the meeting between the stakeholders and could be reintroduced when the new retention policies are announced,” according to a source.
Under the previous policy, an uncapped player could be retained for INR 4 crore. By retaining MS Dhoni at this rate, CSK can allocate more resources to other star players.
Dhoni has played 264 IPL matches and was retained for INR 12 crore before the 2022 mega auction.
