The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to decide whether the India women’s team requires a new captain following their early exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup in the UAE.

For the first time in recent years, the Indian team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, failed to reach the knockout stages, continuing their search for ICC event silverware.

According to The Indian Express, the BCCI will meet with the selection committee and head coach Amol Muzumdar to discuss Harmanpreet’s future as captain. This meeting is expected to occur before selecting the squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, which begins on October 24. Harmanpreet took over as India’s T20 captain in 2016 after the team failed to make the semifinals of the tournament held in India.

Under Harmanpreet’s leadership, India has consistently reached the knockout stages, including a final appearance in the 2020 edition. However, despite having a strong squad in this tournament, India lost to New Zealand in their opening match, which significantly affected their chances of advancing to the semifinals.

Last Sunday, Australia eliminated them from the competition. While Harmanpreet’s position in the Indian team appears secure, there may be changes to the contracts of some support staff.

“The BCCI will certainly discuss whether to have a new captain on board going ahead. The Indian board has provided everything which the team wanted, and we feel it’s high time a new face leads the team going ahead. Harmanpreet will continue to be an important member of the team, but the BCCI feels it’s time for a transition,” a BCCI source told Indian Express

With the next 50-over World Cup set to take place in India, it will be interesting to see if the BCCI makes a decision on a new captain before the New Zealand series, allowing ample time for the new leader to build a squad for the World Cup.

At the T20 World Cup, recurring issues plagued the team, resulting in only two wins out of four matches. Although Harmanpreet contributed with the bat, inconsistent batting hampered the team’s performance throughout the tournament.

The Indian team held several preparatory camps before flying to the World Cup and arrived early to acclimatize to the conditions, which they believed would suit their style of play. Unfortunately, the World Cup became a tournament to forget for India.
